There are quite a few differences, but the difference that will be most apparent to users is the operating system. Macintoshes run an operating system called, for example, OS X, while PCs run operating systems like Windows XP. These operating systems function slightly differently. Many people find the Macintosh operating system more intuitive so this is often a good computer for people who aren't very technology savvy. However, it's somewhat difficult to learn how to use PCs if you only know how to use Macs. People who already know how to use PCs don't seem to have as much trouble figuring out how to use Macs.

Another difference between Macs and PCs is the type of work that can be done on them. While many major software programs come in versions for both types of computers now, there are certain industries that focus on Macs: video editing, graphic design, music notation, and so forth. So if you are in one of these industries you might want to get a Mac. Similar software is available for PCs, but maybe not in as powerful of a version. If you are a general user, either type of computer should be fine for you.

Operating systems, yes.

As somebody who uses a PC at home and a Mac at work, I can tell you that the major difference I have experienced is that Mac's don't work and PC's do. In two years my PC has never crashed. At work, it is a weekly occurence to see a little spinning wheel that means I have to stop doing what I am doing and re-boot or force quit or something else.

Also, while a lot of software is written for both operating systems, only a few categories of software actually work better on a Mac (such as graphic design software). MicrosoftWord, for instance, SUCKS on a Mac.
