It is your body and you can refuse having anything done. It really isn't that bad getting a pelvic.........no one enjoys it but it is just a fact of life being a woman.

Yes, getting a pap smear is an uncomfortable experience for most. However, you should really go and get it done, even though you are not having sex yet. You need to go to make sure you don't have cysts, cancer, or another condition that needs to be addressed. Chances are you don't, but you should go anyway. It will feel uncomfortable for a few minutes, but then you won't have to worry about it for a year, and you will know that you are healthy. Also, don't worry about the doctor seeing you private area. That is what they do for a living, and they have seen many women and don't think anything of it.

I refused a pelvic for my first physical exam, but I don't anymore and I don't recommend that you do. Why? Well, my doctor told me that a few years back he had a patient who was a sixteen year old girl. She was just horsing around with some friends when one of her guy friends slung her over his shoulder and she just screamed in pain. She went to see the doctor and it turns out she had a tumour the size of a grapefruit, despite having had no symptoms. Her condition had nothing to do with sexual activity.
Sure, getting a pelvic exam can be a bit embarassing, but doctors are professionals it's pretty mundane to them. I personally just think of the fact that I'm very lucky to have access to good medical care and can get this potentially life-saving exam. Far too many people in the world don't have this kind of privilege.
Also, you're very lucky that your GP is a woman!
Hope this helps, and good luck to you!

I suppose you could, but I would not recommend it. It isn't just cancer you have to worry about, though that is a huge one. And, there are several types of reproductive cancer they need to rule out, some that can hit very young. There are also other abnormalities in the uterus, Fallopian tubes, ovaries and vagina that they check for that can cause problems in the future. Some of these are endometriosis, ovarian cysts, Fallopian blockage, uterine and cervical polyps, just to name a few. Get it done.

The first time I ever went for a pelvic at 20 yrs old, found out I had cervical displaysia, which is pre-cancerous cells on my cervix. Without that exam, i never would have known and never would have had the surgery to remove it. Please don't think that just because you are a virgin that you are perfectly fine--I wasn't and I am glad I didn't mess around with it. Take care of yourself :)

You still need to have it done It si not just for when you have sex but also you can get pelvic cancer and the test can help with seeing if you have it. You needed to be very honest with your dr. they are there to help you not judge your body dorry if that sounds ruded but If thae way you look is the only reason that you don't want to have it done then that is a cop-out on your part. I hope that you willhave done. If and when you have a baby the dr. is going to see alot more then that and believer me you want even care at that time how you body looks .

Why would it be awkward to say you are a virgin at 18?? if you were 38 and still a virgin i would say you are right but you are only 18!!! any way, you don't need a pap with every physical. I would see a family dr for a physical and a gyn for a pap--they seem to be better at them because that's what they do all day. It's your choice.

I felt the same way when I went to the doctor, I sat there hopping she wouldn't. when She did I didn't feel that uncomfortable and it was over fast but it wasn't quite a pelvic exam but she was down there.
