It had its roots around 1890 by Herman Hollerith. It was called Hollerith Tabulating Machines. Through a series of mergers it became IBM. Do a google search on "Herman Hollerith" IBM for pages that will help. Here is one I just found on IBM's website that has lots of history for you:

Since both the oracles have spoken I can hardly add anything. I would ,however, like to say something about future of IBM. IBM has almost become synonymus with computer. Its future is not blank as if the entire screen has been washed out. It is now a Chinese company Le novo. It is like Adam who the progenitor of the whole world merging his identity with somebody and nullifying the Story of Creation If IBM found such deception peaceful may t its soul(if it had a soul) rest in peace. Some institutions have a debt to pay to history which IBM has disowned blithely.

Although IBM was incorporated in the state of New York on June 15, 1911 as the Computing- Tabulating- Recording Company (C-T-R), its origins can be traced back to developments at the close of the 19th century.
