The answer below is not correct according to the quiz I'm taking. Anyone else?

The over-all balanced equation is:

HF (aq) + NaOH (aq) --> NaF (aq) + H2O (l)

But the net ionic equation is:

H+ + OH- --> H2O (l)

if one uses hydronium ions instead of protons:

H3O+ + OH- --> 2 H2O (l)

The total ionic equation is:

H+ + F- + Na+ + OH- --> H2O + Na+ + F -

Na+ and F- are spectator ions (appear in reactant and product) so-

The NET IONIC reaction is what actually happens:

H+ + OH- ---> H2O

Look, just write out the balanced chemical equation, and then separate each of the compounds into its ions, adding the appropriate + or - charge to them.

or

H+ + F- + Na+ + OH- gives

Na+ + F- + H+ + OH-

where "+" mean a +1 charge, and "-" means a -1 charge; notice that each ion on each side is the same (they cancel each other out. (You see, you can view H2O as splitting into H+ and OH- ions. H20 = HOH = H+ + OH-


And if that doesn't match the "quiz" your taking, then the quiz is wrong.
