Individuals can set a good example for other people. Treat others as you would want others to treat. Don't be racist or stereotypical, etc.. But it's hard to do that because you almost always do that in your mind. But it depends what you do with that prejudice is what counts. It is important to educate the public and stand up for your opinions in a peaceful, non-violent way.

I prefer the word "acceptance" instead of "tolerance" which seems to smack of putting up with someone, not really embracing them.

I think it begins with education. Prejudice is based on stereotypes, ignorance, and insecurity. Also, educating children at an early age to set them on the right road early, even if their home environment is not accepting of others.

Most importantly, we each have to stand up and say something when we hear those who are prejudice tell "jokes" using damaging language that attacks others. We also need to get real when it comes to p.c. things too...lately I have seen things become ridiculous. Let's use common sense.

Get out and get to know people--talk to them. Exposure to other cultures, races, classes, and religious beliefs is the BEST way to overcome prejusice and stereotyping.
