Well, yes, my grandmother was a little odd, and sometimes she made these things up, but is it bad luck to have an unburned candle in the house, or just bad ettiquette, or bad decorating? She would never put a candle out without first blackening the tip of it by lighting it. Is this a superstition? Anyone else ever hear of this?

Sorry, I was more curious to know if there was a "reason" for the superstition. ... what is supposed to happen if you don't do it... Am I supposed to have 7 years bad luck? Or will my house burn down?

I have a lot of unburned candles. Usually, you start a dinner or ritual with unburnt candles (like Shabbat dinner for Jews on Friday night, or on Seder. Or, y'know, whatever rituals you're doing.) You light the new candle, then let it burn until it burns itself out, or snuff it or lick your fingertips and pinch it out if you can't let it burn all the way. You can also clap your hands to put out a candle.
I've never heard of that particular superstition--if I were lighting candles, say, for a dinner, I'd start with new candles.

I've heard of this. The reason to darken the wick, (light it and then you can quickly blow it out) is that bad spirits use this as a gateway into your home. Maybe that's why they start rituals with unhurt candles as the previous person said. The unburnt candles allow the spirits to enter, some may be good, some may be bad. To keep bad spirits out you blacken the tip of the wick. So it isn't so much about luck but bad spirits would be bad luck too

I never heard of the blackening the tip of the candle, but I myself blacken the bottom of the candle before I light them. It is a superstition that I truely believe, it is a luck thing. If you dong burn the bottom of the candle before lighting them it will bring you misfortune, but if you burn the bottom of the candle then you will be showered with good luck! And Im sure your grandmother also believed like that too! I have a book on superstions and many pages in my Book of Shadows on superstions. I have also heard that burning the bottom of a candle before lighting it, will ward off unwanted spirits that may be lurking around.
Blessings, and I hope I helped answer your question. Mare~

Never heard of that. Lots of people have unburned candles in their homes and they've never experienced anything bad. Most people would rather stock up on them and save them for future use which is much more convenient, rather than going to the store each time they need or want one.

Well, I've never heard of it. Maybe she made it up or maybe she didn't. But some people buy candles to decorate their home and they never use them. But they'd probably use them for the future when the lights black out or if there's a hurricane coming.

I was told an unlit candle is bad luck because it represents no beginning and no end.

It's not. If that were the case, I could never keep a stock of candles for rituals.
