If you mean along the sidewalks of streets, here in Seattle a lot of people plant maple trees, cottonwood, and blossoming cherry trees that don't bare fruit. Hope this helps, good luck.

Trees that grow fast have a lower density to the wood. They tend to be weak, and come down in storms. In Texas, Cottonwoods grow quickly, but no one with any sense plants them near a house.

Well, bonsai dont grow by sidewalks but they are small and cute and can fit in a pot in your house. They last a couple hundred years though...they might not grow at all after a certain height, i know bonsai growing is an art form in Japan...

Callery Pear, Mimosa, Redbud, and Locust are a few
I personally would reccomend the Laburnum, it has the most beautiful golden flowers and casts a nice dappled shade. Deer won't touch it, though it is succeptible to wind damage...

Locust trees grow fast but that is in PA. I'm not sure what state you would be refering to. Sorry I am not sure exactly what your talking about
