OK I just saw the new release of this movie tonight,and I believe it said he was born in 1939 he was suppose to have started his killing in 1969 through 1971 I believe was the years and as far as they know the family killed 31 or 33 people,and this is suppose to be based on true events,But he is most likely dead by now or locked far away,So if it's real I wouldn't worry.

The movie is fictional. However, a large portion of it is based on a serial killer named Ed Gien. He lived on a farm in the Midwest. He was charged with the murder of 2 women and body parts including skin masks were found in his house. He died in the late 60's or 70's,not sure. The movie Pshyco is also based on him.

Tobe Hooper thought it up a year before the first movie came out, which was in 1974.
Honey, it's just a movie...the guy never existed. He's a just a figment of the writer/director's imagination. Don't believe the movie. It was just made up!

There is no real Leatherface, I hope you know. But the film came out in the 1970s, based off some of the crimes of Ed Gein, the rest all fictional.

I have many, many relatives in Texas, and many more acquaintances. No one I have talked to tells me this was an actual event, though it is purported to be.
