Are you in the US or the Europe (maintenance engineer reference usually means UK/Europe)? The airline industry tends to go through boom and bust cycles - and the employment prospects go with the cycle. Right now we are on the trailing edge of a bust cycle, meaning, many people have lost jobs (more so in the US) and the prevailing attitude is negative. However, the next two years probably offer the best opportunity for finding a job as the airlines start growing again and take possession of new aircraft.
I've been in the industry 25 years, and it seems we go through these cycles every 7 years or so. It get old after a while, but good luck.

Very good if you get into a company with military contracts like Ratheon, Lockheed Martin or Boeing. My brother is in the field, works by contract (has fantastic signing bonuses) and has lived all over Europe. He currently lives, with his family, in Naples, Italy.
