First off, there are two distinctions here: magnetic north and true north. True north never chages, it is a vector direction set in stone.
Magnetic North, on the other hand, is slowly creeping towards the South Pole. We determine where magnetic north is by looking at a compas and compare where the needle is pointing against where true north is. We then figure out how much of a difference this is with true north.
Magnetic North switches to the South Pole every 10,000 years or so. Too bad we won't see it in our lifetimes, but during the switch we will see multiple poles and the compass will be worthless, as well as airplane navigation equipment.

Magnetic lines are all over the world, for example the magnetic geographical lecture of a line that is over Gander Newfoundland is almost 50 degrees west, coming down to the equator you find that in the Bermuda Triangle there is a lack of Magnetic variation, reaching Cuba it changes to 1 east..There are magnetic lines maps that are very important to aviation.
If you are flying in the north hemisphere near the north pole (geographic) and your heading is 200 degrees you have to add to this heading 50 degrees o magnetic variation to know exactly where are you flying to...you will be lost if you don't do this..Last ..There is East and West variation in the north hemisphere and in the South hemisphere ..As I said before all in maps..if you want to see it..look for a aviation chart (jeppensen) ATL 1/2..any pilot has one on his briefcase...hope I helped..good luck

An easy way to decide it your self is take a long thread and an electro magnetic piece which contains both positive and negative sides tie the thread to the middle of the magnet and carry the thread from the top then by observing the positive and negative sides you can decide north and south pole of the earth.

concerning magnetic north....the north pole has a negative charge and thus attracts the posotive pole on a magnets ...this is confusing but true none-the-less... The south pole has a posotive charge with attacts the compasses negatively charged S pole...
*see my sources below for explanation...this confuse has to do with terminology....
Just like magnets...opposites attract, similars repel...+ attracts - + repels + same with the poles
The poles swap every some odd thousands of years or so...north becomes south...visa versa
This has not happened in the time the compass was invented

as we know unlike poles attract each other so north wiil attract south pole and south will north.
u place a bar magnet freely in air by tieing it to clamp stand or any thing using thread.
then after some time it will rest in geographical north and geographical south . north pole of magnet will rest in geographical north and south will in geographical south.it is posiible only if there is unlike poles .so north of magnet will be attracted by south of earth and south of magnet will be attracted by north pole of earth.
so we can decide earths magnetic poles ---- north and south pole are in opposite earths geographical south and north
in this way we can get decide earths magnetic field.

because the magnetic fields attract &repell so if the south of a magnet faces the north of the magentic it will repell i.e (push back) however if the south pole of pole of the magnet faces the south pole of the magnetic field it will atrract i.e (pull) and vicea versa

the theory that the earth has a strong magnet hidden inside explains why a suspended magnet should point towards geographic north-south.
