the news did a piece on when to get rid of certain types of makeup. i believe mascara should be discarded after 4 or 5 months because bacteria can quickly set in.

Last year, my friend had a Mary-Kay party and the woman there said that due to the growing of bacteria, you should throw out mascara about 3 months after opening it.

Mascara should be replaced after three months, powder eye shadows last for 18 months (any other kind is only 6 months), and eye liners should be replaced after a year (they should also be sharpened once a week to prevent any bacteria from being transferred to your eyes). i know whn mascara is becoming discarded when you are opening it and when you apply the mascara quickly close the top it never become discarded or dry.but after one year you stop applying it.because the guarenty will finish.thankyou......

When you find lashes all over the brush. Lol!
Or when it gets dry... if it begins to clump more than it used to... if your lashes look less full... or whenever you feel like replacing it. If 2 or 3 months work best for you, go for it. Everyone is different!
