It may sound ridiculous but counting sheep (or something you find rather dull) can work! This is because it acts as a focus for your mind and thereby reduces the 'random' element you mentioned.
Try deliberately hard to be very accurate with the exact number as you count. After a while it will become difficult. (This is a good sign), but it is now that you must keep focussed or the random thoughts will begin to dominate again. Ultimately you will lose the battle to keep count as you fall asleep.
A couple of other points:
Have a hot milky drink before you go to bed. And try reading in bed before you get to the counting sheep stage!
Do not fight the random thoughts. But direct your mind to a particular thing instead.
Don't worry and good luck...

1) Avoid caffeine if you drink any. (seems like a no-brainer, but it really does matter)
2) Do less during the day. If you've done so much that your brain is still processing events when you lay down, you may be pushing yourself too hard. But it also, may just be a short-term reaction to new challenges in your life, like a new job or new people that you deal with. If that's the case, it will get better over time.

i do that sometimes, and its ok until it keeps you from sleeping...maybe you arent ready for bed yet....you can try 2 things..the first is tylenol pm(if you have enough hours to sleep and not be groggy in the morning) and if you do take it, take them like 20 minutes before you actually get in bed..so by the time you are in bed, your ready to knock out! and the second thing is watching tv until you cant keep your eyes open anymore, or read a book{i get soooooo tired when i read in bed} good luck and if nothing works, call a doc and ask their opinion, and make sure your not having any soda or coffee or sugar an hour or two before bedtime...good luck

I have this problem, too. Having a soothing bedtime routine helps. That's probably not easy when you're 16. I try to read a distracting book, meditate, drink hot tea/hot chocolate/warm milk, take a bath, any relaxing/soothing thing.
Maybe you could try to write or type those thoughts in a journal and then tell yourself once you shut the book/turn off the PC, you can't think anymore?
I'm anxious to see other people's advice.

I think everyone thinks about the events during the day in bed..
30 minutes is ok compared to some people who take longer, like hours to get to sleep..
Dont worry about it, maybe dont try thinking about what happened in the past day.. maybe focus on something in the future.. or just focus on one certain thing.. like a colour.. or a sheep.. or many sheep lol
ummm if that doesnt work, just drug yourself with sleeping pills. That would probably do the job ;)

oh my gosh, that's so funny, i do exactly the same thing. what helps me is just trying to clear my mind. like meditation, y'know? or, maybe this is just my personal thing, but, in my mind, i picture a point (like a pebble or a star or any small object) going in a small circle. then i try to make it turn the other way. it was surprisingly hard for me, but, again, maybe that's just me. anyway, that spinning object is usually the last thought I have before i fall asleep.

Try taking some deep breaths and thinking soothing thoughts. Buying a sound machine that sounds like trickling rain drops may also do hte trick.

that happens to me all the time. I can't stop my thoughts so I decided to choose my thoughts I think what if and I think about how life would be if I was rich, loved, famous, beautiful, the best person in the world.....whatever makes me happy I think about, so I go to bed happy
