I have 90 Camaro RS, I know it needs a lot of work, when I got it, but Right now I dont wont to do a lot but what does It mean when you have smoke comeing from the oil cap? The car starts great, and does not smoke from the tail pipes, but I do think it is Low on power.

I'm not a mechanic but are you sure it isn't oil coming off the oil cap and burning up due to heat? If there is smoke coming from the oil cap then I would recommend checking to see if there is any oil in the car.

I would think your engine needs an overhaul. Have a mechanic do a compression test on it. Go by what the mech. says. Sometimes the smoke can't be seen by the driver, but its probably there. Being low on power is another sign that your engine needs work. A '90 Camaro has probably been "whupped" a lot with hot starts at traffic lights, and other stuff. An engine will only take so much of that, then it starts using oil, and smoking. The oil filler tube is indirectly connected to the oil pan, and you are having some "blow-by" thru the rings and/ or the valves. Be sure to keep a check on the oil level, until you get it overhauled, or replaced!

Either TOO MUCH oil in the car. (actually worse then not enough oil)
Or you have a blown O ring around the piston in the cylinder. Get a compression check. the o ring might explain the power loss. Make damn sure there is no Blue smoke coming out the tail pipe. Get out of the car, get behind it and have some one give it some gas, a lot of gas to make sure

Yeah, i kind of agree with browning... What you have is blow by in the engine or excessive ehaust gas pressure. Usually the PCV valve eliminates this. Try removing the valve covers and look at the condition of the heads. Is there a lot of sludge in there? If so, the oil drain holes may be plugged up. You should located these drain holes and open them up with a screwdriver. These drain holes run along the edge of the cylinder heads, there should be several. Once you clean them, restart the engine and do a few oil changes, you will probably get a lot of garbage in the oil pan from when you cleaned the head.
Good Luck...........

Hello,
smoke coming out the oil cap is normal. If its puffing like a freight train then I would be concerned.

The engine builds up presure and when you take the oil cap off the presure is pushed out the opening.

you have a compression ring broke on it and its pumping the air out the oil filler cap its called blow back. when this happens you have to rebuild the engine. sorry to be the one to hand you bad news but this is whta is wrong.

Low oil level. Check the dipstick and add oil as needed.

its blow by in the engine most likely coming from worn piston rings live with it unless its really really bad dont do anything to fix you would need a engine over hall.
