In my opinion, there is a slight possibility that the installation of your new keyboard could be the problem. But, most likely it isn't. The first thing that I would try is uninstalling it completely in your computer's "Add/Remove" programs under the control panel. Then, re-install it again. But, I'm not sure if you've tried all the usual options already... But, when I encounter this type of problem the first thing I do is erase all of the cookies and files under "internet options" in the tools menu of your browser. Next, clear the history in the same area of the menu. Next, use your computer's system tools under "Start", "Programs", "Accessories" and "System Tools" to clean up your computer. Choose "Disk Clean Up". Let this run and then completely reboot your computer. If you still encounter this problem try running the Disk Defragmenter listed in the system tools as well. Lastly, you may want to download free software to eliminate spyware from your computer such as "SpyBot Search and Destroy". This is a great free program that works great for eliminating spyware. Any of these things could also be the source of what is "stalling out" your computer upon shutdown. Good luck!

Windows XP restarts when it encounters an error by default. So you don't get the BSOD aka blue screen of death. But the BSOD is useful because when it comes up, it gives information about what the error was, that is, an error code. This code will be in the form "0x00.....8F" or some other last number and letter.

So to change the default and have this screen come up upon the error, push the Windows key and Pause/Break and the System Properties dialog box comes up, click Advanced, click Startup and Recovery, and then find the automatically restart box and uncheck it. click OK, and exit the boxes. Then shut down.

When you get the blue screen, copy down what it says, push the restart button on the front of the computer, and then go to google and do a search for stop errors, even just type the error code into the google box.

Off hand, you might be right about the keyboard if it is a USB keyboard, this will sometimes happen with them. So you can try using a ps/2 type of keyboard or you can get a USB-to-ps/2 adaptor and use the ps/2 port at the back of the computer for it, and then see what the computer does....

USB: Keyboard or Mouse + Selective Suspend. Some USB input devices (such as a USB keyboard or mouse) do not support the Selective Suspend power management feature. When these devices are used with Selective Suspend turned on, the computer may hang during shutdown, or otherwise not shutdown correctly. WORK-AROUND: Disable power management for your USB hub: Open Device Manager (click Start, click Run, type DEVMGMT.MSC, click OK). Double-click to expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Double-click USB Root Hub. Click Power Management. Uncheck the box “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.” OK your way out. NOTE: Doing this may significantly reduce laptop battery life. (Reference & more information: MSKB 315664.)
