1. Alec, I think that it is because they have never seen a number of people suffering terrible deaths due to smoking.
2. If more people would visit the waiting rooms of Chemotherapy Dept. at hospitals and spent and hour observing the lung, throat, mouth, brain related CA, they most likely would swear off smoking for life. It isn't pretty.
Good Luck and Warm Regards.

As I used to smoke I want to answer this from 2 angles, the one where I was a smoker ad the one after I gave up.
1> I smoked because when I started it was the "cool" thing to do. People in my opinion would look at a smoker and think ' they are in command of there own destiny, they're cool' (dumb I know but hey i was only 10 at the time). During a period when smoking was advertised in sports it didn't damage the image that was in my head. Most of the great hollywood actors at the time were also smoking so if they weren't cool who was? Basically I smoked because I was cool.
2> Looking back I was a total idiot.....I smoked because of peer pressure, I let others dictate my life for the next 22 years and all because they said it wouldn't hurt. I got sucked into the HABIT not ADDICTION of smoking and couldnt get out of it until I met a guy who promised me he could help with hypnosis. Well the hypnosis sessions were a waste of money, but myself and a friend (we are fiercley competitive) are still both not smoking because we agreed the first one to smoke would have to buy the other a motorbike.
So to answer you, Why Smoke? Because peer pressure is a damn hard thing to avoid and bad habits are damn hard to break.

Smoking is easy to start and hard to stop. Tobacco has an addictive drug in it. It really calms your nerves better than any prescription. So, once people start-they really do not want to stop-tobacco is good to the smoker, or dipper, or chewer. I smoked for 30 years. It took me about 6 years to quit. I have not smoked since 1991. I could eat a pack of cigarettes right now, paper and all. But I will not.

Habit, stress, to look big or grown up, I gave up three months ago and its the best thing I have done for a long time, I feel fitter, smell a hell of a lot sweeter and with the money I've saved so far I've bought a lap top for myself and donated some money to the Tickled Pink appeal, I am so proud of myself and when I look at women now who are smokers I feel pretty disgusted that that is how I looked myself 3 months ago.

You have to do the math. see, there are people who actually smoke, and there are those that are easily influenced and find it cool to burn out their lungs, have bad breath, and discolored teeth! I choose not to smoke, I love myself too much, especially my teeth!
Put all those idiots together, and you have 1/6 of the world population.

A mass public relations campaign is carried out to make it look glamorous. Movies, TV programs, and commercials all show "the beautiful" people smoking. They don't show the ravages of cancer. Now that people are being told the truth in the USA companies are now promoting the sale of cigarettes overseas.

most of us started when We were young(I was11). when We started, all this great health information that You get wasn't available. if We hadn't started smoking, You would not have this information as, there would have been no one to study. there is a fine line between educated and, self righteous hypocrite and, all of You with these one sided, UN-educated views of life, are walking it. think about this. as long as We indulge our nasty habit, the rest of You loafers will get a big break on taxes, when everyone stops, don't be surprised when toilet paper hits $4.00 per roll. next time You see a smoker, don't judge Him, thank Him for paying Your share.

People smoke because while they were young, they were tempted by the populars. Eventually they got addicted and now they can't stop. On the other hand, some people think it tastes good. Or they it just makes them feel good.
the end. (this was my daughter's answer, she is 12)

That's very sad to hear... 1/6 of the world should not have the right to kill me! If they want to die so much, they don't need little deathsticks to do it for them. Jump off a cliff or something.. sheesh. Don't contaminate the air with your toxic fumes.
