It would be an artistic symbol that the future generation(s) of first nations people was going to be tragic; it would never be the same as their parents and ancestors normal, happy lives.

However, I didn't know people were buying such paintings.

Then again, its normal that babies cry, all of them do, even if its just to say its time for more food, or attention, or sleep.
