It is a lock with a long strong bolt (usually longer than an inch) that can be turned to go into a hole in the door frame. Unlike the spring loaded usual latch you can't spring the dead bolt out of position by pressing on it from the outside. The dead bolt can only be moved by turning its latch (sometimes with a key on both indoors and outdoors)

A lock that has passed away. But I believe you're thinking about a dead bolt.
