Hi there,

a pap smear is not painful at all. The doctor just used a cotton swab (like those cotton tips you would use at all just a little longer) and swab a llittle of the cervical cells from your cervix. Like he would do if he wants cheek cells from your inner cheeks. It is really no painful and if you do not have any signs or symptoms (like foul smelling discharge). The usual time to do pap smear is once every 3-5 years.
Take care.

Pap smears aren't usually painful and don't take more than a few minutes. Your doctor will insert a speculum into your vagina to spread the walls of your vagina apart. Your doctor will rub a soft brush or spatula against your cervix to scrape off some cells. These cells will be put on a glass slide, stained with a special dye and looked at under a microscope. A pap smear is not painful, just a little uncomfortuble and only for a couple of seconds, go for it, it can spot problems, if any, early.

Your first one can be uncomfortable, usually not painful though. You may spot after wards though. It is common, so don't panic if it happens. Just try to relax. The worst part is the speculum they use to "open you up" (sorry have no better way to put it). It can hurt sometimes, but if your relax, you should be fine. This is a necessary test too. Make sure you do it yearly, more if your doctor feels it is necessary.

No, it's just uncomfortable. But it is VERY important to get paps as often as your gyno recommends. So even though it isn't the best thing in the world, you only have to go to the gyno once a year (that is if you're healthy).

No not at all you will feel pressure from speculum but that is about it. It will be awkward but if you have a good doc you feel comfortable very quickly and it only takes a min. A good doctor makes all the difference. Oh and stay relaxed easier for them to insert the speculum. Best of luck!!!

No and it's not uncomfortable either.

You'll just feel a little pressure as the doctor swabs the cervix. Just like as if someone pressed a button with the same amount of pressure.

The only discomfort you should feel is when the Dr. opens the clamp inside of you. A pap saved my life. It's worth it..

It depends on the doctor performing the procedure. I had it done by one certain doctor and I didn't feel anything at all. Then went to a different doctor for the same procedure (to a different one because I moved) and it felt like she was mining for oil. Get references from people you trust about who to go to. It should not hurt at all.

Its just kind of a strange feeling. I find that it helps to take a couple Ibuprofin about 45 minutes before going in ... it definately makes it way easier.
