There are different kinds of tortoises
Tortoises can vary in size from a few centimetres to two meters.Tortoises tend to be diurnal animals with tendencies to be crepuscular depending on the ambient temperatures.
Most land based tortoises are herbivores, feeding on grazing grasses, weeds, leafy greens, flowers, and certain fruits.
Tortoises generally have lifespans comparable with those of human beings, and some individuals are known to have lived longer than 150 years.

Not all tortoise swims. But many tortoise have different kind of feet like duck. These kind of tortoise can swim easily. Even some kind of tortoise can go deep in water and found in sea.

I have seen many tortoise in real who swims. Further u can watch movie "Finding Nemo", in which swimming tortoise has been shown.

Some tortoises float, others sink like a rock.

If the pond was easy to walk out of, not a big problem- even sinking tortoises can hold their breath for a while.

If it is not easy to walk out of, better put up a barrier.

Tortoises and box turtles don't swim :) they can vary in size, depending on breed. Some turtles are bigger than tortoises, and vice versa. It depends on what you want. A turtle needs a LOT of water, but a tortoise needs bedding. Depending on breed, tortoises live longer than turtles, but turtles average 50 years if kept properly :P

I had a tortoise once...It was happy on land but sometimes when it rained a lot ad his place was filled with water, i have later found him outside his place (6 inch high wall surrounding grass, leaves, cilantro etc., and it was a baby, about 2 inch high). I guess i might have swum out of it, but it could be someone who put him out of the pool-created-by-rain... so not sure.. I think testing in the bucket (as suggested above would be cruel if no tortoises can swim). Try asking on google answers if it is a must... there you can pay some money (you chose the price)and professional Internet information searchers will give you the answer. Or ask a veterinarian near you. I would not put him in even little water unless I knew it was safe.

it depends if u trained ur tortoise 2 swim in a tank of water. If it swims in it, u know it won't drown, if it doesn't it will sink.

Air gets trapped in their shell so they float. As long as they can keep their heads clear of the water then they can swim. However if the water gets rough or if they are in the water for a long time they will drown.

they can swim for a little while, if it fell into a pond they would "float" over to the side and try to climb out, if it
couldnt get out, eventually it would drown
