It would take some work, but it could be done. The casual hacker isn't going to spend hours and days hacking your AOL account. It would have to be someone who's absolutely determined to do it.

As long as you do not give it to anyone else, respond to emails directing you to phishing sites, do not leave aol email logged in when leaving a public access computer, and do not run your wireless connection without encryption enabled you should not have any problems. Most passwords are hacked due to simple stupidity of the original user. That being said you should change your password often to be safer.

How badly do they want your password? If they have no particular reason to have it they aren't going to spend much time trying.
Memorize your password- don't write it down.
If this person uses the same computer as you you might want to check it for keyloggers:

As long as you are clever enough not to fall for people sending you e-mails or IMs pretending to be staff asking for your password, I wouldn't worry about it.

Not that hard but it will be time consuming. Both a combination of technology knowledge and social engineering makes doing such tasks quite simple in complexity. However, hackers don't randomly hack people's accounts to read their e-mail if they are of little importance.
