Sounds like your CMOS memory has been corrupted.

This can be caused by an electrical surge, or if your CMOS battery needs to be replaced.

If this has happened, the motherboard has forgotten what cpu you have, what type of hard disk, the time, date, printer port type, and other things. Most of these features will reset automatically if everything else is working, by reading instructions from the BIOS during power on reset. Others wont, and may have to be adjusted manually.

There is a battery on the motherboard, that looks like a quarter.
Usually it is a CR2032, that you can get just about anywhere for about 2 dollars. It might not be bad, especially if is a newer machine. After 6 to 10 years, the battery gets drained.

First try this,

Reboot, and enter the CMOS setup page by pressing the delete key, when the system is rebooting, or F1 key.

You should see the blue screen with system information about the time, floppy drive, hard disks, boot sequence etc.

On the first page, you can correct the system time and date.
You should be able to see each hard drive setting for master1 slave1, master2 slave2. Be sure the setting for each ( on the right side) is set to "auto".

On this page, or the next page, you may need to set the boot order to Master1 ( your first hard disk where your OS is located).
Second bood device should be set to floppy1, third boot device should be set to CDROM1.

There may be a section for your cpu type, see if there is an autodetect feature in the menu. First see if it looks right before making any changes. It probably autodetected it.

Exit, and save your settings.

Power OFF and wait a few seconds, then power on and see if it boots. Go back into the CMOS setup page, and see if it retained the time and date.
Try again, power off for 10 minutes or so, and check again to be sure.
If it didnt hold the date, you need to replace the battery.
A dead battery can cause the motherboard to fail to boot.

If it is still corrupted, you may need to clear your CMOS memory. Sort of a last resort.
To do this, switch the power off, on the back of the PC power supply. This will remove the backup power from the supply.
At the CMOS battery, you can either remove it for a minute, or there are small jumpers next to the battery. Three pins, with a small shorting jumper bridging two of the three pins. Move the jumper from the first two positions, to the second two positions.
12, to 23 for a few seconds. Then put it back to the original 12 position. The CMOS memory will be wiped, and will reset to factory default on power up. You will definately need to reset the date, time, and probably the settings listed above.

Later,
You can come back at a later time if the first part worked, and fix your LPT1 port for your printer.
You will also need to get to another screen, integrated peripherals or something, where you need to change the printer port LPT1 to ECC+ EPP, or your printer probably wont work as well.

Post the model of computer you have so we can better assist with the specific CMOS screen information.

If your PC beeps when the power is first turned on, post the number of beeps, and the sequence.
1 medium beep is normal. Anything else, and the motherboard is having trouble with a piece of hardware, such as the video card, or RAM.

I suggest you power off, remove the video card, and reseat it in the same slot. Remove and re-seat the ram sticks as well.

The Dell website includes full instructions for opening and configuring your CMOS. See the link below. Choose your model.

May the force be with you....
