Unless you were of the working poor or the lowest class of free citizens, you would purchase a male or female slave to be the nanny of your small children. BTW, slaves were of any race, and came from the nations Rome had conquered throughout Europe, Asia Minor, and northern Africa.

After the baby was born, he/she was given to a "wet nurse", a slave woman who was already nursing her own baby and had extra milk.

When the child was a few years old, a girl would be given to the free women of the household to learn household duties and how to run a home. She might learn to read and write and do basic math, but her education was centered around her home and how to manage household slaves.

Male children were given to the care of another slave who became his tutor. The amount of education a boy received was related to how wealthy his family was because a wealthy family could afford a better educated slave. Some boys were set to learn a trade as an apprentice to a free craftsman or learned a trade from their fathers.
