Why is it that when someone asks if you know someone else (say, John Brown), and you tell them that you don't know a John Brown, the person you are talking with starts throwing out all these details about John Brown, hoping that you will magically realize that you've known John Brown all along? If I don't know someone, I know that I don't know them. I don't need you giving me all these extemporaneous details that don't help me because I DON'T KNOW JOHN BROWN!

*sigh* I feel better now. :-)

Maybe they were just "lost in their own little world" and were thinking out loud and at the same time just making conversation but by no means trying to make you know "John Brown".
Your point has been taken though. Loud and clear.
