Take them to a Nursing Home, in costume, and have them give out candy. Everyone forgets our old folks! The people who live there will LOVE it

When we were young my family had a get together. My aunts tuned the lights down and by candlelit we went around the table and listened to a halloween story made up with all our names and things we were familar with.At the very end we all took turns reaching into a pot to "feel" brains(raw hamburger),popped eyeballs(eggs) and rotting worms(noodles).now I understand you have a 1yr old.Mine would eat any of the previous items so maybe on second thought not the best idea right now..lol maybe trick or treating and take a treat to a neighbor who is disabled or maybe there is a older neighbor who once loved giving candy to young ones and no longer can.Perhaps two adorable helpers could assist? Have a wonderful time..

how about a hay ride. thats seems fun. see if maybe your community or town is doing something. i know where i live they have a halloween parade. usually the city puts on events and stuff. so see if you can find either a town nearby that puts on a parade, or hay rides. that should be good for young kids.
oh i just remember something i used to do up until i was fourteen when i had sleep overs with a few friends.
we all took as many chairs we could find, and placed them in a semi large circle and made a tent out of it with a bunch of blankets and other things to help support it. you could probably tell scary stories, make hand shadows with a flashligh, etc..

I was a part of MOPS International (Mothers of Preschoolers) for a few years, and we got together and had the kids in their costumes pass out cookies to residents of a retirement home (kind of a reverse trick-or-treating thing). The residents love getting kids visiting them anyway, but to have a bunch of little kids dressed up in everything from a princess to Dora to a box of McDonald's French Fries (with baby brother "ketchup"), really made their day, and it was a great opportunity to introduce the idea of being charitable, and for them to have exposure to elderly people (and kids who have early exposure to elders regularly when they're young can really reap the benefits of the wisdom those people have earned).

How about you tell scary stories that are age appropriate and dress up in costumes. You can sing spooky songs and cook witches brew every year. Witches brew can be any special drink that you like to make but serve it in a cauldron (cheap at department stores) and tell a story about where the brew came from.

get them to decorate a room in halloween stuff. get them to make pictures of black "kitties" and stuff like that. they're still young so you don't wanna scare them. i worked a lot with 1 year olds, and they want to try new things themselves. give him/her a piece of paper and tell him/her to draw a kitty. decorate the entry way or wherever you're giving out candy and maybe let the little ones give some out or get them to yell happy halloween or something. but whatever you do make sure it won't scare them to death...i always get scared that night

go for a ride to a real cemetery. take large pieces of tracing paper and black artist's coal/crayons/pencils. cover a tombstone with the paper and rub the inscription to make it show on the paper. make a collection of these.
Just stay away from the really weird stuff. Stay safe!

I think a good one would be to dress up with them, use a different theme every year. Different characters from their favorite shows for example.
