I am an undergraduate student right now, and by the time I graduate, I would have received 2 BA's (History and Psychology, with a minor in Communications). Would it be beneficial for me to spend another 2-4 years in grad school and spend probably another $80,000 on my education, or should I just go enter the working world right after graduation and try to see if I can actually get a writing job?

People become writers because they write, and they get an agent and do the writing business. Friend of mine has a couple books published, because she writes books in her field and found a publisher and meantime, she works as a technical writer for some company and raises a teen-ager.

J.K. Rowling was a mother of two on welfare and now look at her - did she spend $80K on graduate school?

You need a job and you need to write and write and write...

It wouldn't hurt, but if you feel you have the knowledge to be a writer right now, go for it. You can always go back to school after you have achieved the state of your own perfection later. But if you do put it off now, don't do it because some one talked you into it, do it because you want to do it. Otherwise as the years pass you will regret not doing what your own mind told you to do and you didn't do it. Second thoughts notwithstanding it is a poor choice for doing anything when some one else talks you into doing something that in your heart you don't want to do right now. So, in my humble opinion, do what you have your heart set on.

You don't need any college degree to become a writer. Yes, perhaps it might help, but many writers without college degrees do quite well. The bottom line: You'll have to good at it and dedicate yourself to disciplining yourself to write every day. If you only write a couple times a week, you might just ask yourself if it's really your passion.

If you want to be a writer, write something and put it in an ebook and see if you can sell it through clickbank.

Put up a website and write a good sales copy to promote it and see what happens.

A graduate degree will never hurt you.

You always have the option of working full time, and going to grad school part time. This way, your company will pay for it. The time flies. Trust me, I've been there.
