I think this question is subjective. You, the asker, could be successful in your own right with the simplest of goals or the most excellent achievements. Famous "success stories" are usually rooted in just a normal person doing phenomenal things, usually things that help other people.
When I think of "successful," in the context which you are looking for, I think of Bill Gates (just an ordinary techie guy who started a business in a garage with Steve Jobs, another guy, who founded Apple), Oprah Winfrey (a TV commentator turned entertainer and a conduit for others to be a "success" story), Kerry Strugg (a kid, a gymnast, who landed Olympic gold with a broken ankle), and the like.
I think true success comes in the people we love and who loves us back, even if it is for a short moment in time, and then those who survive each day, just day by day. Again, subjective.
Thanks for answering your question; it made me stop in my day to ponder.

Osama bin Laden. His name is known by billions. He has his own army. He practically runs a Jihad.
