There is a fine line to separate the two. Look around at your life. How are things at work or school? If those things are going OK, you need to look at the home situation. Are things going well at home? How do you feel about you home life? Do you feel that you have a future ahead of you?

If your depression is causing your life to be miserable you will recognize that your life really isn't all that bad - but you just feel bad about things. You will see that you could improve it a little, but it really isn't too bad.

If your life is causing the depression you will see the entire home and work situation as hopeless. You can't find anything positive to say about home or work. You can't stand to be either place, but you end up spending your time there because you don't have the energy to go anywhere else.

You may be able to tell by what you are thinking. Thoughts can sometimes create moods. Pay close attention to the talking inside your head that goes on, you may even want to jot the thoughts down.
If your depression has been with you a while and seems to not letup, I would seek a professional to help you analyse the problem.

What situation are you talking about? it depends if you have too many worries in your life, you get depression when something happened to you that you could not handle, because depression does not attack you just for the heck of it.

It kind of twists in there together... Eather way something obviously has to change for you. Sit down and really think about what the biggest changes you need to make... do you want to change jobs? Do you want to go back to school? Do you want to trade in your car for that truck you always wanted? Do you want to move into a bigger place or a smaller place? Do you want to look up how to do creative things,,, like painting your house or fixing up your garage... what ever it is... find something motovational that will make you happy and run with it :)
