just a little comment, first of all: the correct way to say it is "why DO the popular girls get the cute guys" (sorry, i don't mean to be a "know-it-all", but it was just bothering me....)
and, about the question, those things happen a lot in high school, because guys that age do things mostly ignited by testosterone.... i guess they're trying to prove to other guys "hey, i can get the cute chick, dude!"....
that's very inmature but usually they come to their senses by the time they get a little older and they realize that popularity is not everything...
looks are not everything either, so why focus on the so-called "cute" guys?
everybody has a beauty of their own!....
