Because we seek an escape from the scary issues that face us. Whether it is how to move up the corporate ladder, how to pay the bills and whether global warming is real and my fault, the antics of celebs are a great escape. So we end up with increasing quantities of celebrity news and decreasing levels of valuable news on meaningful issues that have an impact on our lives.

I don't know. I've wondered that too. I think it's us fantasizing that we could be them...sort of. We are so intrigued by them because they're living a life that we want to, but can't. They have time and money to do stuff we could never dream of, and so we want to know as much about them as we can. And, you have to admit, America loves drama. We like to see what is happening in real life to the people we see on screen or hear on the radio. So, our fascination is, as you might take it, a form of jealousy, which is the highest form of flattery.

It's just like in school, when the popular kids were like celebrities. They were stared at and admired. There was one football hero in school during the lunch break people would line up to get his autograph. I was one of them.
I remember once when the most popular beautiful girl in school smiled at me and said hi. I felt like I'd seen a movie star.

No matter how they are in real life (i.e. selfish, rude, arrogant etc.) We just love them on TV. They make entertainment and you gotta accept their courage to show their faces to millions of people and making them happy. Heck, I live in california and even out govenor is a celeb (but no one likes him anymore, he's horrible! it's arnold schwarzneggar)

Because people wish they were like them. People sometimes wish that they have that much clout (or little) for them to act like that. They wish they had the money, the fame, the papparazzi and everything else in between. They want to have their life, no matter how bad. You'd be surprised how many people would do ANYTHING for their 15 minutes of fame.

Because people are shallow insecure losers who actually look up to and care what celebs do. They in a sense are...petty.

Because watching celebrities' lives falling apart on VH1 makes people feel better about their own lives.
