It's always good to let the person know that you love them not necessarily as a boyfriend?girlfriend but for who they are. Let the perso nknow that he/she can always lean on you and you'll always be there to catch his/her every fall.. Sometimes just being there says alot and actions speak louder than words so when you're saying these things, look in the persons eyes and actually mean those words.. Sometimes when i'm depressed, i'm not in the mood to hear all those cheesy statements and all i want is someone to talk to and take all my feelings out on.. Just be there for your friend that's the most important thing..

Unfortunately, when someone is depressed, nothing you can say will really help much. There is certainly nothing wrong with being kind to them though, so just encourage them to do things that take their mind off the depression, even if for only a few minutes and make sure they keep as busy as possible. Also try to make them laugh or at least smile, as laugher and smiling releases endorphins, which makes us all feel better. Take care : )

I'm very depressed right now. What I would like to hear is someone that really knows me saying they care or would like to make a new friend.

You don't want to just be nice, you want to lift their spirits. If it is someone you care about ask them about what is bothering them, maybe they need to let it out by talking about it. Be a good listener. Depression can lead to far more serious problems.

Tell them you love them, I deal with depression all the time, and even though everyone tells me I'm a great person, I feel worthless, nothing like a hug from a friend. And pray for them, they really need it.

Laughter is the best medicine. Compliments are nice. The old "Cheer up its not so bad" is the worst thing to say and its condescending.

Tell them you care/love them and are willing to listen to what they have to say. Sometimes they really need to talk to someone who truly listens. If s/he is really depressed, suggest professional help to help alleviate his/her suffering.

SMILE!!! If you care for that person tell them you are their for them and that you'll help them get through what ever it is that is making them sad. In times like that all you want is to be with some one who cares for you.

The best thing to say to someone like that is, "I know you are hurting, but I just wanted to let you know that I am here for you. Please feel free to talk to me anytime you need to."

"I'll do the dishes."
"Sylvia Plath was depressed, too, and she was a friggin genius."
"I wonder if you could give me some advice on XXX."

Whatever you do, don't say something like:
"Cheer up."
"Look on the bright side."
"I hope you feel better soon."
"I know how you feel."
