I have to write a paper on sensationalism, rationalism and romanticism. I get what they are and don't need a definition, but I don't understand what they mean/meant for society...How did they influence ethics morals and values?

well, try getting to the root of the words itself. you don't have to struggle with big hairy themes.
sensationalism -- to sensationalize -- to make a big hairy deal outta nothing -- that's pretty much the people who want you all on the edge of your seat, worried that tomorrow may never come....every little bit of news is the next major doom & gloom. It keeps people on guard, worried, and in a worst case scenario mode. that can be helpful if you're running for office and want to promote your cause. it seems their goal is to influence people when they are too busy looking at the inflated news account.

rationalism -- is the opposite it seems. nothing is a big deal, there's always an explanation, cause & effect. this is what causes people to under react - to not pay attention, to believe the world is what it is what it is and for every thing that happens, there is a rational explanation. phooey.

then there's the romantics......ah, everything is painted in a rosey light, bliss, harmony - isn't life so magical. while looking for the silver lining in cloud 9, they neglect to see that cloud is in the shape of a mushroom. oops! I might be sensationalizing, because a rational reason might be the contrails or clouds naturally formed that way. hmmmmmmm the effect they have on society is similar to giving everyone who subscribes to this philosophy a really good joint to smoke, and nothing matters beyond karma and beauty.
