This has happened about 4 other times within the past 18 months. Twice it was followed by a headache. What could this be? Any ideas or similiar expereinces? Hi! I'm a doctor. What you have is called "classical migraine". It usually starts with an "aura" that in most cases is visual on one eye (like seeing blurry on one eye) and this is followed by a severe throbbing headache around 15-30 minutes after the aura. The headache is usually located more on one side of the head than on the other and you may or may not have the following symptoms: photophobia (not able to tolerate light), phonophobia (not able to tolerate loud sounds or loud speaking), nausea and sometimes vomiting, and there is also frequently a sensation of numbness that can be located in your face, arms or legs.

There is nothing wrong with your eyes, so don't worry! There are very good medications for that, however even OTC medications like Ibuprofen and Aleeve are very good in treating many migraines (need high doses though, like Ibuprofen 600-800 mg once AT THE START of the headache, NOT WHEN THE HEADACHE IS AT ITS HIGHEST POINT, THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!!). However if your migraines are more severe and not relieved by these medications, you may need to use medications called "triptans", which almost always abort a severe case of migraine.

Migraines are not dangerous, and are very common. If they are getting frequent it would be good to visit a Neurologist, so that you may have medication available when you have the headaches. Ah, and frequently there is a hereditary component, so any of your relatives might have it.

It could be a migraine. Check out some of the symptoms and you'll see if what you experienced was a migraine. There are many websites you can find info about them. One of the misconceptions is that you have them all the time but you can have a migraine headache once in a while or several times a month.

Go see a doctor to get a true diagnosis. I've been having migraines for several years now and there are medications which can help. Good luck!

it could be something as simple as a migraine or something serious like mini-strokes. i dont know how old you are or if you take any meds, or if you have any medical conditions. you need to see a doctor ASAP even though you've had an eye exam.
