I am attending school online and only need the laptop so that when riding the bus, or at lunchtime at my job, I can work on my classwork. I dont need bells and whistles, and I am going to purchase an ethernet card from T-mobile, to use to access the internet. I do not want "deals" that include signing up with Vonage, or any other company. Either online or in town stores are acceptable (I am in HOuston, Astrodome area) Thanks, in advance!

You might reconsider the purchase of the T-mobile ethernet card, unless you have carefully checked out the costs. Their service costs $20+ per month. The wifi card they sell is the Sony Ericsson GC89 they sell for $199.99. A wifi card is $40 or less.

If you have DSL or cable at home then you can buy a wifi card and not have to deal with T-mobile's charges.

As far as the laptop goes you can purchase refurbished for $450 or less. Go to google and search for "refurbished laptop" or "used laptops" and check out the top 2-3 companies.

go on ebay, find a tidy looking pentium 3 laptop from a major manufacturer, spend some cash on a new battery for it.
I got one for $100 working fine-if its more than three years old the battery will almost certainly need replacing (thats why i said a major make).
also consider getting a pda- dell are good, so is HP. Get one with wireless networking and you can pick up internet on most street corners with software such as wififofum and hitchhiker.
Now I have a pda i keep my laptop on the desk!

These guys are the walmart of online computer sales, they've got everything. By advised that this won't be the latest and be sure you check out all the specs so you don't have to upgrade it out of the box. Ex - sometimes they only come with 256k of RAM and to get the speed u need you have to add more memory. Good luck.

Check ebay for a used computer. You might be lucky and find a really powerful machine at a good price.
