Cars only have one spare today for several reasons. First, a spare is only meant to get you to the nearest repair shop. If you've done any traveling on the nation's interstate highway system you'll agree that you are rarely very far from some kind of town, tourist trap, or truck stop where further help is available. Cars of the 1920's and 1930's usually carried two spares due to the greater distance between developments in those days. Secondly, road quality has improved tremendously since cars were equipped with multiple spares. Poor roads equaled more flats. Finally, there is a design compromise with respect to storage space. To many spares in the trunk means no room for luggage. It is not unthinkable that as run-flat tire technology matures, it will be available on more and more vehicles and perhaps the spare tire will finally become obsolete.

First, todays tires are much sturdier than the tires of old.

Secondly, the roads are much better,

and last of all there is the space factor. Tires take up a lot of space.

If someone was planning to go far off road they might be wise to fasten an extra spare to the vehicle on the roof or anywhere they can. Off road there are sharp rocks and sticks that can do in even todays great tires.

I haven't had a flat in many years and I drive forty miles one way to work.

I guess the odds are in your favor not to get more than one flat at a time.

because you aren't suposed to get a flat, and if you do, it's usually only one......you would have no room in your trunk if you had to carry around 4 wheels
