There are several kinds out there... but most of them need distilled water to keep from clogging with scale. Anyone have experience using a certain model (not a whole house humidifier) with plain (hard) tap water?

I had one of these several years ago and there were chemicals I put in the water to take care of the minerals in the water. I can't think of what they were. Try Sears or Home Depot. Sorry I don't have more detail but I know that it's out there.

the reason they want you to use distilled water is because the minerals in hard water clog the heating elements causing them to burn out quicker. if you want to use plain tap water, then run the hot water for 5 minutes then use that water. or boil some water on the stove for 5 minutes and use it. hot and or boiled water has less minerals in it and will take longer to gum up the heating elements.

Use the water from the hot water tap if you start getting mineral deposit buildup use CLR (read directions on package) works for me

there is no humidifier that will work well with hard water. They will all get that mineral buildup. You can collect rain water and use it
