Its all about strategy. The other properties with houses and hotels pay more but are only represented on one side of the board. As well they do not have to be improved upon and the rent they bring is always 1/8 of the total investment with 3 then 1/4 with the acquisition of the last one. Because of the railroads unique placement in the center they are subject to being hit with every roll of the dice. Not to mention that nasty little chance card which says to pay owners twice the rental value or to Advance to Reading Railroad. I have always liked the railroads and found them most cost effective. I like having a safe haven on every side and the railroads provide that.

I commonly use the railroads as trading fodder in attempt to secure the Free Parking corner, as gaming statistics (I don't remember the source) has pegged the Reds & Oranges as the most-hit spaces on the board.
One property with a hotel can cause more damage to a player's wallet than the railroads. If you hit a Railroad, you pay up to $200 a piece ($400 if forced by a Chance card). If you hit a property with a hotel, you have to pay anywhere from $250 to $2,000 a piece!
The odds of hitting a railroad on any given turn is between 1:10 to 2:9, but the odds of hitting a developed property on a given turn is between 1:10 - 4:7. If you own a side or a corner, the odds become as high as 6:5!
The only downside with owning a block, is that the odds are only good every 4 turns per player while Railroad odds are always constant as the Railroads are 10 spaces away from each other.
Please note that the odds stated are based Hit:Miss ratios with the 11 possible spaces (2-12) you could hit, so that 1:10 means that 1 number will hit that one of the targeted spaces while 10 numbers will miss it.

I personally like the railroads. It's a 200 payout for each, and a total of 800 paid out total if you get all 4 right? Right. And once you got all 4 it's 200 every time someone lands on it. And there one placed midway along each side of the strip. So its inevitable that people will keep landing on them. And it's also a good way to occasionally avoid landing on someone else's monopoly and having to pay out big.
It's the best for you or your friend's perspective really. You get one more property than any individual section. AND...you ALSO have at least a one in a shot chance each side of the board in avoiding someone else's property. And then there's the cards that send people directly to your railroad and make them pay double. Personally, (don't know about you or your friends) but it always fills me with a sick sort of pleasure whenever this happens. :)

If I was playing Monopoly, I would prefer to have one section of the board. If someone landed on, with a hotel, it is more of a payout opposed to a railroad. With a railroad on each section, the odds of landing are slimmer than landing on a section because it is spread out and not bunched together. Hope this makes sense.

I've played this game for many years and it's better to own all 4 railroads as the chances of landing on one is greatly increased over the span of the board than just in one location.

As the game progresses, the railroads shrink in value because a.) most of the other properties can be improved and b.) the players, on average, are growing richer by $34 per turn. Mortgage the railroads and build houses on your monopolies.
May I recommend The Monopoly Companion by Philip Orbanes?
The most commonly landed on space, BTW, is Jail. Since the most common roll of the dice is seven, potentially, the most landed on Monopoly is seven spaces away from Jail!

If by section, you mean the whole side, (like the purples and the blues) that would be better. It's harder to skip a whole side than the railroads. Don't get me wrong, it is good to have all the railroads, because people tend to land on them alot. (i know i try to get them all) but if it was a case of one or the other, I'd take the whole side.

It's better to have all of one color than all utilitites or all railroads. The odds of another player rolling the dice and landing on your property is increased by having them almost lined up like that. It's all in the odds of the roll and the odds are increased in your favor. There are 11 squares on each side. So per roll, the odds for landing on a railroad are 1 in 11. The odds of landing on a property of a particular color on the average, (Unless we're talking about Boardwalk/Parkplace or Baltic Avenue/Mediterranean Avenue) are increased to 3 in 11 odds per roll.

Odds are better to land on a section.of 2 or 3 properties. Only have 1 chance to land on a RR. on that side of the board! The odds aren't so good for the RR's because you only have 4 chances of landing on them on 4 sides of the board. Forgetting cost of property is one thing but rent is different and you just can't do as well on collecting on the RRs.
