Good question!!
They should be an important part of transport and construction as well as exploration and sport!
Could the Hindenburg disaster really have squashed any potential future for them that badly?
They could be very safe with current tech, materials and gas mixtures. They could be amazingly massive as well!
Again good question...and one that doesn't seem to have a reasonable answer.

The Hindenburg disaster. But if you use helium for lift, instead of hydrogen, dirigibles are a safe way to travel. Helium is expensive and only a few countries produce it, but airships use much less fuel than heavier than air craft and we'll probably see them used more and more in future. They've got some niche uses, like studying the jungle canopy.
