When my daughter was young and getting out of hand I used to tell her that if she continued to misbehave I would sell her to gypsies (Oh, I know, its awful, but we get a big kick out of it now). If she continued to act up I picked up the telephone and pretended to call the number of the head gypsy. That always straightened her out far better than time out or a spanking.

When my son was little, and he wanted me to buy a toy or something he really did not need, I would tell him the store was all sold out.

We would "pretend" to keep a watch out for when the store might have more, and then buy it. My son would generally forget about it, so it worked for most of the pre-school years.
