How extreme do you think it is? The US isn't Indonesia or Mexico or India after all. The discrepancy between the rich and poor in the US looks pretty good to me, but then I'm a world traveler and have a clue. You would be hard pressed to find a "poor" person in the US who is hungry. In fact, obesity is a problem among the poor in the US. You'd also be hard pressed to find a "poor" family in the US without a color tv, cellular phones, a playstation and gameboys. The truly "poor" who are hungry and homeless usually have drug addiction, alcoholism or mental illness. Unfortunately, in the US, "poor" often have no incentive to get off their behinds and get a job. It's easier and just as lucrative to live off the government. I'd rather keep the incentive for hard work than turn this nation into a socialist nirvana where everyone is equally a slug.

Actually, this is definitely not true.
Not that there aren't people in America who are very rich, and some who (by American standards) are very poor. But the difference is not nearly as big as in other countries.
In the USA, to be in the top 10% of families, you have to have a family income of about $120,000. And to drop into the lowest 10% of families, you have to have a family income of less than about $8000. So the difference between being in the bottom 10% and the top 10% is a multiple of about 15x.
There are lots of countries where the difference between the top 10% and the bottom 10% are more like 50x or even 75x!!!
The total amount of money in the whole world is roughly $60 trillion per year. Divided among all the people of the world, that would be roughly $9000. So 90% of all the people in the USA have more money than the average for the whole world. Even the poorest Americans are well off by world standards.
It isn't all about money. In our state, a family that has essentially no money will get housing, medical care, food and education for free. The house they get will have as much clean water as they want, will have a heating system that will keep them warm in winter (required by law), will have electricity 24 hours a day (required by law) and the kids will have free schooling and free lunches in school.
Ofcourse, the conditions these folks live in are not luxurious and I'm not saying that their lives are wonderful. But it is just plain wrong to suggest that the lives of the poor in America are in any way comparable to the lives of the poor in other countries where children do manual labor when they are little, are routinely abused, have no homes, no sanitary facilities, no clean water, no sanitary food supply, no medical care or education at all.
