He used to be a country singer, and now he's on some weird kids' show called Hannah Montana. When did this happen?

before Hannah he had a series on the Pax network called Doc for 4 or so seasons, and i think he did odd acting work before that. the first being in a Dolly Parton Music Video.
As to his role on Hannah I think it was a package deal for his daughter to get the job as his name brings instant recognition(good or bad) to the show.
He still makes records, and his latest came out a few months back, His daughter has parts on a few songs on the album.

1999 he got the title role in an indie Roadhouse type movie called Radical Jack then David Lynch cast him in the film Mulholland Drive in 2001.
He did the show Doc for PAX from 2001-2006. Annie Get Your Gun on stage in 2005 in Toronto and lots of guest shots in TV shows such as The Nanny and South Park. He now does Hannah Montana and is one the friendliest guys you'll ever meet. Very polite and humble.

When people realized what a lousy country singer he was and stopped buying his CD's. He needed another source of income so now he's on Hannah Montana.

He had one TV appearance (as an actor) in 1992; has been acting regularly since 1999. Some might say he's better at acting than singing. I wonder, though, with the mullett and the song "Achy Breaky Heart" if he wasn't acting a bit in those days.

His kid, Miley Cyrus, is Hannah Montana. I think that he got the job because of her or vice versa.

that's funny actually, because I just watched him on some show this morning. It's called "Doc" or something, so he's been acting for a while.
