40+ mph. they usually dont run full speed though until they are close to what they are chasing.they do have excellant endurance and have been followed and clocked at 40+ mph for several miles. my hybrids would constantly chase each other for hours before stopping to rest.

A wolf has a top speed of around 40 mph. Usain Bolt's top speed was around 27 mph. The wolf won't be able to maintain that for long, just like a sprinter cannot maintain his top speed over long distance. But out in the open, even with a good head start, the wolf is going to win. Don't try to outrun the wolf, just outrun anybody else who you are with. Once you get to moderate or long distances, we don't have good information for wolves, but we've got a great substitute - the sled dog. During a race, sled dogs can average 20 mph for 25 miles or more - that's a marathon, in the snow, at a 3 minute mile pace pulling 85 pounds per animal. Over longer distances, they can go 10-15 mph, for up to 6 hours at a time. The world marathon record was run at 12-13 mph (12.69 mph if you want to split hairs), meaning that over 25 miles, the wolf still wins. Not only that, but the wolf could outrun you with a child riding on its back. The world record 100 km ultramarathon pace was about 10 mph, taking just over 6 hours. So that means that even out to 60+ miles, you CANNOT OUTRUN A WOLF!!

They can trot several miles at 6 miles per hour but can run in bursts of 40 mph. They don't catch their prey with bursts of speed they simply run it into the ground. The speed burst is to spook the herd and select prey.
