I just got some goldfish and I am curious to know what the flake food is....and what do goldfish, or species like them eat in the wild?

In the wild, goldfish are omnivores. They eat plants, insects such as mosquito larvae, small crustaceans, zooplankton, and detritus (dead plant and animal matter found on the bottom).

In captivity, goldfish are commonly fed dried flake or pellet food. Good diet supplements include freeze dried Tubifex worms, mosquito larva, bloodworms, Daphnia, brineshrimp, and vegetation such as boiled peas and lettuce.

Its a fairly complicated process, but to oversimplify a whole lot, all the ingredients (listed on the package) are ground up and blended, then the mix is extruded into very thin sheets (by passing it between rollers). The sheets are dried and then broken up into small flakes and then broken up into flakes, then put in airtight packaging. Does that answer any part of your question?

Flake fish food is ideal for tropical fish and goldfish. Especially for the small and poor appetite ornamental fish. it provides a complete balanced daily food for all the fishes.
ingredients:
high class fish meal, plant astaxanthin, animal proteins, soya meal, cereals, fish oil, multi vitamins and trace element.

Turn the package of food over to the back, the ingredients should always be listed. I myself don't give my goldfish flakes, I feed them sinking pellets, peas, and I make a homemade gel using baby pea food, baby carrot food, broccoli, paprika, tuna, turtle pellets and just about any fresh veggie I can find. The carrots and paprika are good for the orange color. Goldfish aren't really found in the wild they are grown in goldfish farms just to ship all around the world.

Flake fish food is simply made from all the leftover garbage in food processing plants -- stuff swept off the floor, mostly. In the wild, goldfish (actually carp) eat pretty much anything.

It's kinda complex but pretty much long story short they take shrimp and all the rest of the ingredients (that it says on the container), blend it very well, press it very thin, let it dry, and then crumble it into flakes.

Just smell it. It has a fishy smell of its own. I think it's made from leftover fish guts and such other waste from fish processing plants.
I know my baitfish love the stuff.
