If you're Canadian you should be checking with your country's requirements for leaving the country.

In the USA, effective January 2007, all US citizens will be required to have a passport to re-enter the US after leaving for any reason. That means Canada, Mexico, Caribbean or anywhere else in the world.

Right this minute, US citizens don't need a passport to go into Canada or to re-enter the US from Canada. But you have to have ID and it's wise to carry your birth certificate.

Btw, if anyone is planning on traveling out of the US at any time in the future, it'd be a really good idea to go ahead and make plans to obtain your passport now before the rush begins. Passports are good for 10 yrs & then have to be renewed within a certain time period without having to go through the whole process over again.'

Yes, it is.

It is possible to cross the border from the U.S. into Canada without a passport, but those cases involve business or residency claims. For example, if you are a U.S. citizen taking a train into Canada to visit or job-hunt, you may not need a passport.

That being said, if you plan to cross the border by car...you should bring your passport with you or you may be turned back. Canada is very similar to the U.S. in many ways; but they are still a different country. It's always easier just to have it on you.

On January 8, 2007, U.S. citizens traveling by air between the U.S. and Canada will be required to present a valid U.S. passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document.

Most likely, by January 1, 2008, you will need a passport for crossing the border from Canada to the US (won't matter by air, land, or sea). This is currently under discussion within Congress so this may change.

I just went to Canada from the U.S. last week and just needed birth certificate and photo ID. But either in 12/06 or 12/07 - can't remember which, the requirement is changing and passport will be required.

It's not a requirement right now, but starting in the new year, you will have to have a passport to enter the States by plane or boat. You may, however, still drive though the borders by car. I saw it on the news tonight.

Yes. In January a new law went into action making a passport required.

They may have changed the rules - but it use to be only if you were flying. You could cross the boarder by motor vehicle or on foot with your state id/license.... but the rules may have changed

It wasn't when I went last month, all they require is proof of residency (like your drivers licence) but security is increasing so it may change soon.
