No, ulcers are not generally life threatening.

I'm assuming he has one in his stomach. There are a couple of different kinds in the stomach (peptic and duodenal)

Basically your dad is going to be on some medicine, and he's going to have to watch what he eats. It's really common, and not a very big deal.

Relax, he's going to be okay as long as he follows his doctor's advice.

It's no where near life threatening, ulcers may be caused by stress, but there's new studies suggesting that they may actually be caused by a form of bacteria in your mouth.

Look dear you didn't specify where is the ulcer, but I think he means peptic ulcer.
It means break in gastric or duodenal mucosa[lining layer of stomach & duodenum]
It results from many things as
increased acid activity due to emotional stress.
diminshed resistance of lining layer due to malnutrition, atherosclerosis ,increase bile reflux in stomach, diminshed PG due to aspirin & related drugs.
A kind of bacteria called Helicobacter pylori.
Hereditary.
Smoking.
Hypercalcemia.
Blood group O .
Long term steroid therapy.
The clinical picture in short is:
-pan.
-nausea & vomiting .
-Heart burn & water brush.
-anorexia & weight loss.
-GIT bleeding.
-conistipation.
Look dear signs may be absent at all .
Treatment is available but if neglected may lead to serious complications.
Treatment is :
****Medical:
-exclude malignancy in gastric ulcer.
-dicontinue non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs as aspirin & related compounds.
Stop smoking.
-Reduce gastric acid secretion by H2 receptor blocker as CIMETIDINE[tagamet],antodine, rantidine ]& proton pump inhibitor as OMEPRAZOL.
improvement of mucosal defense through SUCRULFATE.
fOR ERADICATION OF BACTERIA USE
metronidazole[FLAGYL]500 MG TWICE/DAY + CLARITHROMYCIN 500 MG TWICE/DAY
Just try this & notice me.
And not to worry about80-90% of duodenal ulcer & 60% of gastric ulcer heal after 6 weeks of treatment.
& I'll pray & ask Allah to help your father .
I hope I could help.
