I am in the same situation. My 8 year old was born with fat rolls already, but my 5 year old is skinny. So obviously it is not what I feed them or we would all be overweight. I have had her checked and was told she just has a slower metabolism. I was overweight till I hit puberty, so I am hoping the same will be true for her.

Thyroid? Diabete's? Take her to the Dr. and find out to see if it is medical. Don't take this the wrong way---most obese childern are due to their diet if it is not a medical condition .....not over eating is not the same thing as eating healthy balanced meals. Parents often confuse the two look at your eating habits, how often does your family eat out/fast food/ snacks etc. How many of fresh serving of fruit and veggies does she/he eat every day?

eliminate soda
begin exercise
moderate candies
keep total calories to <1800 /day

each of these should help reduce the weight gain of any person. if you think about it, soda alone is like 100 calories. figure 3/day, 7 times per week, that's about 2100 calories per week. if you can cut 3000 calories per week, you should see a decrease in weight of roughly 1 lb/week until stabilization.

good luck.

The previous answers are correct, diabetes can also cause unexplained weight gain/loss. There are many things that could be the cause, you really should discuss this with her pediatrician.

I agree with what big mama said and you should take her to see a nutritionist too.
