Newton came to discover the foundations of physics, with the apple falls from the tree thing. The problem was this new science was so complex, beyond algebra at the time. Thus he practically invented calculus to do the math of physics. There were many inventors before him who had come up with many differentials, but Newton almost always gets the credit.

Archimedes almost invented Calculus and was on the verge of doing so...but got his head chopped off as he was doing this (war going on and he was sitting on the ground doing math in the sand).
The mathematics that Newton did to describe phenomenons in physics laid the foundation upon which calculus was based. So, to answer your question the Physics came first and as a result of understanding more of Physics the new math calculus was born.

Hi. Calculus was invented to help solve orbital mechanics problems that were too difficult for the physics of the day. So really the "other way around".

Well, nature invented physics, but Newton and Leibniz invented calculus. Certainly physics was on Newton's mind when he was constructing calculus.
