I know that on the College Board's website it states not to use "Mechanical pencils" during the SATS but I don't really think it makes a difference. I plan on using a 0.5mm #2 Lead/Mechanical pencil, will this make a difference?

You should look for one of those "mechanical" pencils that answer the question for you. :)

While I'm a mechanical pencil man myself...For those test the #2 pencils are better, especially if you plan to use a 0.5mm pencil.

The mechanical pencils will take you too long to fill in the circles.
Use them when you want to do scratch work but use the wooden pencil to fill in the bubbles.

Well, mechanical pencils tend to be a lot darker than the regular ones, so they color can go through the other side of the answer sheet. Which can mess you up, as you will be using the back. And they also smear a lot worse. So take 6 or 7 sharpened regular pencils.

It's kind of a strange rule, but if they caught you, then yes, you will not get scored. But if you just switched to a regular pencil without the test proctor ever noticing, you'll be good to go because Lead pencils don't make a difference. I personally have no idea why the rule is implemented. It's stupid and unnecessary. Maybe its just another unnecessary rule to screw kids and force them to pay more money to retake the test? Anyways, bottom line, as long as the test admin never acknowledged you using a lead pencil, you're good to go!

I administer the ACT tests at our school. We have received guidelines that tell us to inform those taking standardized tests that new scantron graders do not pick up the lead marks from those types of pencils. They are designed to read the old fashioned #2 wooden pencils. Honestly, I wouldn't risk taking the test and putting forth the effort to have it returned with any kind of error in grading. It may only skip an answer or two, but that can affect your score and in turn...affect scholarships, etc. Use the old wooden ones..just in case. Good luck on your tests!

I think the concern is just make sure you color in the circles dark enough. I think I used mechanicals on my Praxis Tests, so I can't see why SATs would be different. Good Luck!!
