My GF is pregnant, she took a test on Sept. 27. Her last full period was the first week of July, she had only light spotting the first week of August, and no period in September. However, according to an ultrasound on Oct. 11, she's only 4 weeks pregnant (conception date time). How can she only be 4 weeks pregnant as of Oct. 11, when her last possible period was August 2? Is it possible to not have a period? She is normally very regular. The fetus measures 8mm, which is larger than it should be at 4 weeks, according to what I've read. The ultrasound was performed by a nurse at a clinic, not by a doctor yet. I'm guessing the diagnosis is wrong. Any help?

She may have gotten pregnant just before her period was supposed to start. Or it may be due to stress (Especially if this is not a planned pregnancy). Either way the light spotting she had counts as a period. The machine is the one that does the calculations all they have to do is read it. But I guess it could be possible that they got it wrong somehow. When the calculations are done the lenght of the fetus is not the only thing factored because you may just be having a large baby. They also measure and look at other areas that have to be at certain levels of development to figure how far along you are.
Below are a couple sites that will help give you a better understanding of all this.

If her last period was August 2, then she could have conceived as late as August 21. If that is the case, I would say she was probably closer to 7 weeks pregnant as of October 11. If she was under stress or worried about being pregnant, it could have easily caused her to become irregular, in which case, she could only be 4 weeks pregnant. In either case, the important thing now is that she receives proper medical attention from this point forward.

With my 1st child, I missed 2 periods before I found out I was pregnant and my due date didn't coincide with my missed period. It is possible. I didn't have periods at all for 3 years after he was born and I am now pregnant with my second child.

This is a pretty good site for fetus sizes.

Look here to see when a fetus is around 8mm

Usually a doctor does not do the ultrasound. I have only had technicians do them...... But when you go to the next ultrasound you can have a second opinion

Could be that she got pregnant very near the time her next period would have started, which would have been the beginning of September.

Doctors estimate that your date of conception is usually 2 weeks after your last period. Get it?

she can miss a period with still ovulating. so 4 weeks is probably accurate. the baby may be large for it's gestational age, but ultrasounds are pretty accurate that early on.

If her hormones, weight or stress are at different levels than normal, it is possible to miss a period.
