I do it quite a lot; affirmations to gee myself up; reprimands when I've done something daft; when I am rehearsing what I'm going to say to someone if I know it's going to be an awkward/important conversation.

No, that's normal. It's abnormal if the person isn't talking to themself. As if they were hearing a voice nobody else could hear and conversing with it. But just talking out loud to yourself is quite common.

No, it does not indicate mental illness necessarily, but it is not a good idea to do it out in public. People will look at you funny. Someone might even call the cops, thinking you are deranged and maybe dangerous.

I'm no expert but i don't think it is a problem. People ask them selves things all the time and can answer them out loud. Some people might think better out loud. It happens. You are completely Normal.

I'm sure you've heard jokingly many times that it's O.K. to talk to yourself as long as you don't answer yourself. I don't know if this is really true, but I do know that as a child, my mother often talked to herself while cleaning, cooking or doing whatever. I called her on it on several occasions and swore I'd never do this. Well, I do it and I do it a lot and really don't think anything about it. Some times coworkers kid me by saying something like, "who you talkin to?" But it's all in good fun and everybody is used to me doing it and they don't think any less of me.

Most people do it. People love to say "talking to yourself is the first sign of insanity", but it's not. A real sign of insanity is when you talk to yourself and expect a different "you" to answer.

Speaking to yourself out loud is not as bad as talking to others in your head.

Isn't that right Charles?
