Whenever my car is in park and I am about to shut if off, it idles VERY low and quietly cutts off by itself and the battery and oil lights come on...it kind of shakes when it does this...it's only when I am not pressing the gas...it also will turn off when I am in reverse and backing up...and then as I start to go forward it will do it. Any ideas?

Idle set too low or you have vacuum leaks either in lines or intake. Could also have dirty carburator or fuel injection components or incorrect timing!

Generally when this happens it means the the throttle body is dirty. The throttle body controls airflow into the engine similar to an carburator. The difference is that instead of sucking fuel down with it , it draws air over sensors that will send a sgnal to the computer to control the fuel flow. There is also a motor in there that controls the idle when you let your foot off the gas pedal. Over time this motor and passage get sludged up and need to be cleaned. If it is dirty the air will not go through and the car will not idle.

Sounds like you have either a vacuum leak or the engine is in bad need of a tune up. All your lights come on because of the idle being too low. You never mentioned what year make or model you own so i dont know if you have a carb or fuel injectors. If your fuel filter is dirty or clogged you will get the same symptoms.
good luck.........

IAC valve (Idle Air Control) Commonly bad on Ford vehicles. I bet it dies at red lights whenever you stop also. Expect to pay around $80 for the valve and most shops get 1 hour flat rate labor to install (around $80 an hour in my area) Hope this helps.

Open your hood and make sure all of your hoses are connected! I had a ford that did that same thing....it would even die on the road if you weren't stepping on the gas! The clamp on one of my air hoses had worn out and lost its spring! I just replaced it and hooked up the hose and it worked fine!

Usually the pcv hose breaks, if you changed it, unhook the battery for 5 minutes, the reconnect it and try it. You may also have bad plugs or wires.

you don't say what year, an old car would need a tuneup. the lights coming on are normal with the motor off and the key on :)

If its a stickshift, then its probably your clutch, otherwise your fuel pump may be going out, or your fuel filter maybe clogged

I would recheck the area you worked in earlier and around it for
a vacuum hose disconnected.
